RETURN TO THE SEA OF CORTEZ August 7 - November 18 This exhibition tells the story of the 2004 voyage recreating John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts's famous 1940 collecting expedition to the Gulf of California combining science, philosophy, and adventure in a search for a wholistic view of the world. Included with Museum Admission.

Peggy Olsen’s new show, “Almost Abstract”, is a slight departure in style for this very popular landscape painter of colorful California country-sides. Olsen’s painting style has never been “traditional”, but her latest works—showing from October 2 through November 4 at the Carmel Art Association—are a bit more abstract, with vivid color, as always, being a significant component of her work. In addition to Olsen’s show in the Beardsley Room, the CAA’s October Gallery Showcase in the Segal Room will feature Heidi Hybl’s abstract oils and Norma Bhaskar’s acrylic figurative and landscape paintings and monotype prints. An opening reception for Peggy Olsen and the Gallery Showcase artists will be held on Saturday, October 4th from 6 to 8 p.m.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS by William Shake-speare. Directed by Kenneth Kelleher. Tow sets of identical twins (master and servant) – separated by a shipwreck in early childhood – unwittingly cross paths in the magical city of Ephesus. Plunged into a whirlpool of confusion, a series of chance encounters leads to mistaken identities at every turn . Add to this a pair of spirited sisters who discover that love at first sight isn’t easy when two men look exactly the same! Drawn from a Roman comedy by Plautus, and possibly one of Shake-speares’ first plays The Comedy of Errors is a zany mix of mad confusions! This hilarious play is a riot of high spirits and fun, easily accessible to audiences of all ages.

Weekends. Enjoy a unique Halloween tour through Wild Things animal facility. Stroll through decorated grounds, while costumed tour guides tell myths about exotic wild animals. Refreshments follow with a photo opportunity with "spooky" Halloween animals.

This exhibition of poet Robinson Jeffers and writer John Steinbeck is arranged in pairs of passages by topic, including spirituality, rivers, writing, love and animals. Paintings and photography of family and the California landscape that inspired them both are included to echo and enrich the writing.

This exhibition examines the parallel lives and artistic accomplishments of the Armin Hansen and William F. Ritschel, two preeminent artists who defined California landscape painting. In the 1920s and 1930s, at the height of their fame and careers, Hansen and Ritschel both lived on the Monterey Peninsula and from here, they exerted a profound impact on the development of Early California art and the Monterey school in particular. In this exhibition, the Monterey Museum of Art will reconsider the contribution of these two contemporaries in rich visual relationships and a newly reinterpreted historical and biographical context.
