A "Family Friendly" Welcome

With nearly 300 lodging facilities across Monterey County, it's no surprise that plenty are perfect for family vacations, short or long. "Family friendly" can mean extra rollaway beds, adjoining rooms for older teens, even accommodation packages that include value-added coupons for local attractions or restaurants.

Choosing the ideal accommodation for your family depends on the age of your children, your interests, and what you like to do together. Are you keen cyclists, even if the littlest ones ride in a trailer? You might stay near the Monterey Recreation Trail: the Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay is adjacent to the Monterey Maritime Museum and offers a "Children's Activity Guide" full of local kid-friendly attractions, while the Embassy Suites Monterey Bay at Seaside's Roberts Lake has convenient kitchenettes.

If your kids are interested in marine life, why not stay in Monterey. The Victorian Inn is one block from Cannery Row, just steps from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and its lively Splash Zone; there are a host of choices in and near downtown Monterey, from the Monterey Marriott located walking distance from Fisherman's Wharf to budget-conscious motels on Munras Avenue, a short bus ride away.

Like to hike? Stay in a cabin or resort close to the state parks and beaches of Big Sur, or at the Carmel River Inn, close to Point Lobos State Reserve. Are you learning the finer points of birding or flower-identification? Several of Marina's new hotels and motels, including the Holiday Inn Express Marina, are within easy walking distance of the rare habitats in the Marina Dunes State Reserve. Interested in John Steinbeck or heading for the rodeo? Salinas has a brand-new Microtel Inn & Suites that might just fit your family like a glove.

Vacation Rentals Roughing It

Vacation rentals—renting a home or condominium—is another wonderful option for those who seek a more personal home base during their stay. Designed for the longer-term visitor, vacation rentals are regulated by each city and the county, and typically require a minimum of one month's stay. Vacation rentals are ideal for large families or groups of friends who want to stay together, but still enjoy the privacy of their own rooms.

If your idea of getting away from it all means roughing it, Monterey County offers several places to pitch your tent or park the RV. From Marina to Big Sur, there are sites with hook-ups, shower facilities, ocean views and redwood groves. In southern Monterey County, Lake San Antonio offers a whopping 2,300 campsites and 265 RV hookup sites. Call 831-755-4899 for reservations and information. For more information on camping in Monterey County, visit the Monterey County Parks web site, the California State Parks web site, or the Outdoor Life/Parks page on our web site.
