Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

Named one of Sunset Magazine's "four best spots to pitch a tent on the coast," Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a favorite of many hikers. With an 80-foot waterfall, a scuba-diving area and on-land spots perfectly placed for whale-watching, it's no surprise why. Follow Route 1 south from Carmel for 37 miles to reach the park. Or, nearby Big Sur Lodge has cottages for rent, a heated pool, grocery store, gift shop, and restaurant.
