La Mirada, situated on a two and one-half acre knoll overlooking Lagunita Mirada and Lake El Estero, is one of the region's most significant historic structures. The original adobe portion of the house, built at the turn of the 19th century, was the residence of Mexican general Jose Castro. In 1919, the property was purchased by author and playwright Gouverneur Morris, a descendant of the Revolutionary War figure who helped write the U.S. Constitution. The property passed to the T.A. Work family in the 1930s and in 1983, Frank Work deeded the Castro Adobe/Work Estate to the Monterey Museum of Art Assn. State-of-the-art exhibition space was added in 1993 with the completion of the Jane and Justin Dart Wing, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Charles Willard Moore.
Visitors to La Mirada are treated to an adventure in early California history, to antique furnishings and decorative arts, to exhibitions related to California regional art, Asian art and art of Pacific Rim cultures and to gardens and courtyards richly planted with roses and rhododendrons.

Museum on Wheels is the dynamic multicultural outreach program of the Monterey Museum of Art annually reaching over 10,000 children in elementary schools throughout Monterey and neighboring counties. Experienced educators stress the arts as an integral part of social studies and work closely with classroom teachers to complement school curricula through multi-media assemblies, the display of the two hundred piece-traveling exhibition of art from over fifty countries and "hands-on" crafts workshops. Educational exhibits are available in large boxes or poster portfolios. Folk Art Boxes provide artifacts and teaching resources; Poster Portfolios contain color-laminated posters with accompanying text, related video or slides and/or books.

The Seaside City Hall Building, with a capitol-style dome, was designed by a world-renowned architect, the late Edward Durrell Stone, and was completed in 1966. Housed within City Hall is the Art Gallery. The Gallery extends the two twelve-foot wide corridors that lead to the City Council Chambers located in the center of the building's main floor. Inside the Council Chamber, which covers 1500 square feet, is additional wall area dedicated for display of artwork and the City's Permanent Art Collection.
The monthly displays are coordinated by the Seaside Art Commission. Two large glass enclosed display cases are also made available each month for the artwork of sculptures, glass blowers, and a wide range of crafts. Special themes for exhibits featured during the year include Jazz/Art, Cultural and Ethnic Displays, Youth Art, and the Annual Art Competitive.
