Point Pinos Lighthouse is located on the northernmost tip of the Monterey Peninsula. At the time when people sought to add a measure of safety to navigation of the seas, this point of land, marking the entrance to Monterey Bay, was a definite hazard to the mariner. A great stride in the direction of safety was the erection of the stone lighthouse. Shortly after California became a State, Congress appropriated funds for six lighthouses on the coast. One of these was at Point Pinos. Its beacon has shone since February 1, 1855. The building, lenses and prisms of the light are all original. Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West coast and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Point Sur Lightstation sits 361 feet above the surf on the seaward brow of a large block of volcanic rock. Throughout history, this rugged promontory has been regarded as a navigational landmark. The nearby coastline was the site of many disastrous shipwrecks, including the Navy Dirigible Macon. Today, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Point Sur contains all the buildings of a self-sufficient 19th century Lighthouse facility. As a part of the Big Sur coast for over 100 years, the picturesque buildings inspire an aura of mystery and haunting beauty, continuing to be an important landmark to modern day mariners as well as travelers along California's Coast Highway One. It is recommended to arrive a half-hour ahead of tour time, first come first served. Buses, campers, strollers, and pets not allowed. Calling recorded message is advised.
