Guests are transported back into the life and times of these people in vivid detail by our accomplished historic preservationist. His fascinating discussion explores what made these personalities tick as well as the evolution of the unique architectural styles. We'll start by touring the reverently serene Carmel Mission established in 1769 by Padre Junipero Serra. Raised to the status of Minor Basilica in 1960, it now stands as one of only two basilicas in the entire Western United States. Known as the religious capital of Spain's New World, the mission is complete with beautiful courtyards and gardens, and a picturesque bell tower. Father Serra is buried on the property, entombed in a bronze sarcophagus. From here, we'll move on to Old Monterey, California's first capital. The best way to explore Old Monterey is on foot, so prepare to join our professional guide for an unhurried, rewarding stroll back in time.

You'll experience the serenity of rustic adobe homes, complete with antiquities of the day, fine decorative art and charming gardens. Steeped in history, you'll experience wandering through several adobe buildings appointed much as they were in the early 1800s. The Custom House was just that—a building where customs agents gazed out to sea from an upper room, keeping watch for ships' arrivals. You'll also tour the Stevenson House, among others, a two-story adobe known as the French Hotel where the young writer Robert Louis Stevenson stayed while we pursued his future wife, Fanny Osbourne. A private luncheon in one of the adobe gardens can be arranged upon request, availability pending.
