We'll pick you up at your hotel for this six-hour tour, which starts on the Monterey Peninsula at the family summer cottage in Pacific Grove where Steinbeck's ashes were laid for two days at the foot of the pine tree he planted as a child. We'll continue throughout Monterey and Pacific Grove visiting other homes the Steinbecks owned and occupied and many of the other places John and his family and friends frequented. We'll also bring to life many of the characters and places Steinbeck immortalized in his books, and learn of his life from his birth to his death in New York. The Salinas Valley and its agricultural landscape peopled with farmers and immigrants provided rich fodder for Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck's literary imagination. His life experience in the area led him to produce some of America's most beloved novels, including Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Great Expectations.

First we'll head to the National Steinbeck Center to tour the new 37,000 square foot museum dedicated to the author's works and life. The interactive nature of the exhibits allows for a fascinating afternoon—start up an old crankcase automobile engine following the instructions taken right out of one of Steinbeck's novels! Here in the heart of Steinbeck Country, you'll discover a wonderful secret—some of California finest wineries, fog and sun, sea and soil—the elements which lend so much beauty to this area also contribute to the distinctive quality of Monterey County wines. With over 32,000 acres of vineyards, Salinas Valley comprises one of the largest premium-growing regions in the world. We'll tour the Central Coast agricultural basin and proceed along the Santa Lucia mountain range to Smith & Hook/Hahn's giant wine-barrel shaped tasting room where you'll enjoy their exceptional reds with an optional private luncheon. Then it's onward to the family owned and operated Paraiso Springs Vineyards where the tasting room is seated at the edge of the 400-acre estate.
