Though it might seem nearly impossible to cover all of the highlights of this culturally rich and historically important area, we do our best with this wonderfully diverse tour of Monterey, Carmel and Pacific Grove. From the reverently beautiful Carmel Mission founded by Father Junipero Serra in the late 1700s, to the small group of adobes located along the "Path of History," our guide will fill in the details about the history of Spanish settlement in California. Monterey is the home of California's First Theater, and it's first jailboth still standingas well as Colton Hall, where delegates debated statehood at the California Constitutional Convention in 1849. We'll also cover Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, colorfully immortalized by writer John Steinbeck, a well as the uniquely charming village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. No tour of the area would be complete without meandering along the exclusively elegant 17-Mile Drive with its cypress groves, world-class golf courses and stunning ocean views. You'll feel like you didn't miss a thing after this wonderfully complete day in Monterey Bay.

This tour is a great introduction to the beautiful and historic Monterey Peninsula. The lively, picturesque 18th and 19th century era is well preserved throughout downtown Monterey. The tour will include a stop at Fisherman's Wharf before guests are introduced to historic Pacific Grove and Cannery Row. Guests will stop at the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and discover the undersea world of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. Visitors will wind their way across 17-Mile Drive's magnificent coastline, through pine forests and groves of Monterey Cypress. A stop for browsing and shopping in quaint, sophisticated Carmel-by-the-Sea will preface a visit to Carmel Mission, one of the original Spanish missions started by Father Junipero Serra. Luncheon options include one of Carmel's charming restaurants.

There's much more on the Monterey Peninsula than golfing, shopping, and even the scenery. Monterey is the most historic place in California and was once the third largest seaport in the world. Our waters have more marine variety than any other place on earth. Every community has its characters and characteristics. You won't just see ityou'll experience it all: from the geology to the whales; from the Indians to the golf course, starting with the Indian burial ground where it all began; historical landmarks, adobes, Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, Pacific Grove, Asilomar, Pebble Beach (17-Mile Drive), Carmel, and the Carmel Mission. In 1880 the Pacific Improvement Company built the Hotel Del Monte, to lure visitors to the Monterey Peninsula. "The Queen of American Watering Holes" boasted some of the finest appointments on the Pacific Coast. In 1881, Pacific Improvement opened a road as a sightseeing tour for guests of the Hotel. "Some of the most beautiful scenes along the California coastindeed along any coastare found on this drive which skirts the Del Monte Properties." Guests will follow the complete and original route, reliving the tour taken by turn of the century guests of the Del Monte Hotel.
The tour begins at the Hotel, now occupied by the Naval Postgraduate School. Although the hotel burned twice, many of the old structures remain. In addition to the stately architecture, guests will view the McComas Mural and an old succulent garden. Then, on to the edge of Pacific Grove to Hopkins Marine Station and the site of a lost Chinese settlement. Round the point where the warnings of Point Piños Lighthouse frequently guided sailing ships (or sometimes not!!) to the safe harbor of Monterey. The coastal splendor of Asilomar Beach then gives way to the majestic Del Monte Forest and Pebble Beach. Deer freely roam the emerald pine and twisted oak forest. Magnificent mansions are scattered along a shoreline that alternates between cliffs, plunging down to rocky waves and beaches, once covered with pebbles. Guests proceed to Carmel Mission with its unique style that is echoed throughout the Peninsula. The second in the trail of missions left of the bay. Historical tidbits and picture postcards for each guest completes the presentation.
