Though it might seem nearly impossible to cover all of the highlights of this culturally rich and historically important area, we do our best with this wonderfully diverse tour of Monterey, Carmel and Pacific Grove. From the reverently beautiful Carmel Mission founded by Father Junipero Serra in the late 1700s, to the small group of adobes located along the "Path of History," our guide will fill in the details about the history of Spanish settlement in California. Monterey is the home of California's First Theater, and it's first jail—both still standing—as well as Colton Hall, where delegates debated statehood at the California Constitutional Convention in 1849. We'll also cover Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, colorfully immortalized by writer John Steinbeck, a well as the uniquely charming village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. No tour of the area would be complete without meandering along the exclusively elegant 17-Mile Drive with its cypress groves, world-class golf courses and stunning ocean views. You'll feel like you didn't miss a thing after this wonderfully complete day in Monterey Bay.

HISTORIC 17-MILE DRIVE & CARMEL MISSION

In 1880 the Pacific Improvement Company built the Hotel Del Monte, to lure visitors to the Monterey Peninsula. "The Queen of American Watering Holes" boasted some of the finest appointments on the Pacific Coast. In 1881, Pacific Improvement opened a road as a sightseeing tour for guests of the Hotel. "Some of the most beautiful scenes along the California coast—indeed along any coast—are found on this drive which skirts the Del Monte Properties." Guests will follow the complete and original route, reliving the tour taken by turn of the century guests of the Del Monte Hotel.

The tour begins at the Hotel, now occupied by the Naval Postgraduate School. Although the hotel burned twice, many of the old structures remain. In addition to the stately architecture, guests will view the McComas Mural and an old succulent garden. Then, on to the edge of Pacific Grove to Hopkins Marine Station and the site of a lost Chinese settlement. Round the point where the warnings of Point Piños Lighthouse frequently guided sailing ships (or sometimes not!!) to the safe harbor of Monterey. The coastal splendor of Asilomar Beach then gives way to the majestic Del Monte Forest and Pebble Beach. Deer freely roam the emerald pine and twisted oak forest. Magnificent mansions are scattered along a shoreline that alternates between cliffs, plunging down to rocky waves and beaches, once covered with pebbles. Guests proceed to Carmel Mission with its unique style that is echoed throughout the Peninsula. The second in the trail of missions left of the bay. Historical tidbits and picture postcards for each guest completes the presentation.
