"LA LOTERIA" AT NATIONAL STEINBECK CENTER

Americans may have their scratch-off lottery cards, but Mexico revels in a bingo-like game called "loteria." A new exhibit at the National Steinbeck Center unveils oversized cards painted by artist Teresa Villegas, in "La Loteria: Exploration of Mexico" (September 2-November 5).

John Steinbeck set several stories and film scripts - including The Pearl and Viva Zapata - in Mexico and was intrigued by Monterey's Mexican-Spanish background in stories like Tortilla Flat. Today, farmworkers with their cultural roots in Mexico tell their stories in the Rabobank Agricultural Museum, part of the NSC.

The exhibit opens with an artist's reception on September 1. For more information, call 831-7754721, or visit the website at www.steinbeck.org.
