Monterey GalleriesArtists have been drawn to Monterey by its shifting skies, glorious sunsets and dramatic contrasts of land and sea. Galleries showcase the works of artists, known and, as yet, unknown.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is famous for its galleries tucked in quaint buildings on small village streets. Here one can see classical masters and modern sculptures, bold color splashes on large canvasses and subtle watercolor landscapes. Local artists also display their work in the numerous galleries of Pacific Grove, Monterey, Big Sur, and on Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. Visitors and residents enjoy browsing for treasures at the frequent arts and crafts fairs. The annual art tour is a popular event and an opportunity to visit artists in their own studios.

  • Built in 1928, the Carmel Art Association has the oldest art gallery in the area, with more than 120 artist-members.

  • The Monterey Museum of Art features photographs, paintings, sculpture and folk art of the region, as well as art of California, Asia and the Pacific Rim. The main gallery combines music and art at its Third Thursday evening event, with similar afternoons in the beautiful La Mirada gardens on the first Sunday of each month. Light refreshments and wine for purchase are available at both events. Free to the public.
