Monterey County has a surprisingly busy lively arts scene. Year-round, visitors can enjoy music, theater and dance in a variety of venues. Festivals highlight all types of music, from jazz to classical, reggae to ragtime. Theaters offer large- and small-scale productions to delight audiences of every age. Local dance schools perform, sometimes with guest artists, and dance clubs often give lessons in styles like swing and country line before the floor opens for public dancing. JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC

American theatre is full of great playwriting teams, but few can match the success of Rodgers and Hammerstein. From their first collaboration, "Oklahoma" in 1943, to their final project, "The Sound of Music" in 1959, they proved to be the most innovative team in Broadway history.

This holiday season The Western Stage presents Rodgers and Hammersteins groundbreaking musical South Pacific. Set on a South Pacific island during World War II, the play follows the romances of Emile de Becque, a middle-aged French plantation owner, and Nellie Forbush, a Navy nurse, as well as Marine Lieutenant named Cable and a young Tankanese woman.

With classic standards like "I'm Going to Wash that Man Right Outta' My Hair" and "Some Enchanted Evening," Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest musical, South Pacific, is a powerful story of love, race, and prejudice.

The Western Stages South Pacific will run from November 10th December 8th, 2007 at Hartnell Colleges Main Stage. For more information call (831) 375-2111 or visit the Western Stages website at www.westernstage.org.
