Theater is alive and well in Monterey County. Several theaters present classical and contemporary works, in settings that range from small stage to outdoor amphitheater.
California's First Theater presents authentic 19th-century melodrama in their historic building on Scott and Pacific in Old Monterey. (The interior is currently closed for renovation.)
The Pacific Repertory Theater makes its home in Carmel. PacRep presents classical, contemporary and musical productions in the 300-seat Golden Bough, the 90-seat Circle Theater, and the Outdoor Forest Theater.
In Salinas, The Western Stage presents dramas, toe-tapping musicals, and other entertainment including plays based on Steinbeck's novels and those representative of the area's diversity. A new group, Paper Wing Theatre Company, presents occasional plays that benefit the Fox-California Theater for Performing Arts.
A production at the Wharf Theater is the perfect ending to an evening of dining on Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf.
On the university scene, CalState University, Monterey Bay's World Theater presents regional and national touring theatrical productions, dance companies and music festivals, in addition to student productions.
Student productions can also be seen at Hartnell College and Monterey Peninsula College. Newspapers carry up-to-date listings and reviews of local performances or visit Theatre Calendar for an update to date listing of theatrical performances.
