THE HISTORY OF MASTER BOAT BUILDERS

The Master Boat Builders of Italy exhibit, recounting the contributions by Siino Monterey Boat Works, will be on display March 23rd through May 29th in the lobby of the Monterey Maritime and History Museum. Janet Magno Martinez, granddaughter of Master Boat Builder Angelo Siino, pursues the life long ambition to preserve the history of contribution to the California Fishing Industry by the Siino Monterey Boat Works. Janet collaborated with uncle and Master Boat Builder, Raymond Siino, in the telling of their story for this exhibit. Angelo, one of three brothers, emigrated from Italy and finally made his home in Monterey. His sons, Raymond and Frank Siino, became the next generation of family boat builders. Without the benefit of drawings, they learned to apply Old World skills and patience in crafting each boat. The Siinos improved the Fish Hopper and created the Sardine Hopper. The transfer of sardines to canneries via the Hopper allowed the Monterey fishing fleet more time for fishing.

For more information on this exhibit visit the Monterey History and Art Association website at www.montereyhistory.org.
