Monterey County has a surprisingly busy lively arts scene. Year-round, visitors can enjoy music, theater and dance in a variety of venues. Festivals highlight all types of music, from jazz to classical, reggae to ragtime. Theaters offer large- and small-scale productions to delight audiences of every age. Local dance schools perform, sometimes with guest artists, and dance clubs often give lessons in styles like swing and country line before the floor opens for public dancing. "THE ORIGINATOR" SINGS AT SUNSET

Authentic stardom graces the stage at Carmel's Sunset Center on September 27 when Bo Diddley steps on to the stage for a knock-out one-night performance. He's supported on the bill by Alvin Youngblood Hart, one of the best young bluesmen around, and Ruthie Foster, a rising vocalist often compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.

Diddley is a living legend, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1998. 2006 marks his 50th anniversary in popular music. Fans of every age will pack the audience to sing along with "Mona," "Hey Bo Diddley," and "Who Do YOu Love?"

ITALIAN ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM AT SUNSET CENTER

Ensemble di Palermo e Teatro Massimo brings the best of Italian music to Carmel's Sunset Center on Friday, October 22, at 7 p.m.

Based in Palermo, Italy, the group includes ten musicians representing the first instruments of the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra. The prestigious ensemble boasts an impressive list of past performances. including New York's Columbus Day Weekend celebration and the Piedmontese Grinzane Festival.
