The Monterey Bay Aquarium launched "Oceans 2006: A Year of Exploring" in January 2006, with special activities and an official explorers passport for kids. Passport holders collect stamps at designated events and venues, and complete special downloadable activities. At years end, prizes and an exclusive event await those holding completed passports.
Also tops for kids are the annual Aquarium Adventures programs, offer behind-the-scenes tours, sailing outings and SCUBA programs for kids each summer. Throughout the year, families can pet sharks, marvel at swirling jellies, and discover more than 35,000 animals and plants representing more than 550 species found right here in the Monterey Bay.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium first opened its doors in 1984, and it has been one of California's prime attractions ever since. Its exhibits are consistently innovative, appealing, and exciting to viewers of all ages, yet its educational message underlies all its activities.
