For the past 42 years the Castroville Artichoke Festival has been one of the largest tourist attractions in North Monterey County. It remains as one of the few "small town" festivals that enjoys popularity with visitors and locals alike. The festival retains its flavor of the many distinct and diverse cultural tastes of its citizens, which are evidenced by the variety of its entertainment menu. The Artichoke rules supreme and as always the festival capitalizes on its brush with fame as it promotes its brief touch with the cinema goddess; Marilyn Monroe, who became Castroville's first Artichoke Queen in 1948.
