Monterey County has a surprisingly busy lively arts scene. Year-round, visitors can enjoy music, theater and dance in a variety of venues. Festivals highlight all types of music, from jazz to classical, reggae to ragtime. Theaters offer large- and small-scale productions to delight audiences of every age. Local dance schools perform, sometimes with guest artists, and dance clubs often give lessons in styles like swing and country line before the floor opens for public dancing. For more information, see the performance arts listings at the Cultural Council for Monterey County or visit the Monterey Bay Theatre Alliance website.

A NEW LIFE FOR THE GOLDEN STATE THEATRE

When it opened in 1926, the Golden State Theatre was "The Showplace of the Peninsula" and the largest theatre between San Francisco and Los Angeles. After suffering years disrepair and remodels, the Golden State has been restored to its former glory over eighty years after its original opening. Today, the stage is used both for film and for live performance, attracting world class entertainers such as Bill Cosby, Willie Nelson, K.D. Lang, Hall & Oates, Brian Wilson, B.B. King and many others.

KING HOLDS COURT

For more than half a century, B.B. King reigned as the King of Blues, defining the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over fifty albums, which include classics like "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues." A Grammy Award winner, as well as a member of both the Blues Foundation and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, King has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles, influencing the likes of thousands of guitarists from George Harrison and Eric Clapton to Jeff Beck.

B.B. King will perform on October 25, 2007 at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey. For more information call (831) 372-3800 or visit the Golden State Theatre's website at www.goldenstatetheatre.com.
